What outbound links do and do not carry
Every link to a provider carries rel="nofollow noopener external". Nofollow instructs search engines not to pass ranking signal; it is the correct attribute for a link a publisher has an editorial reason to place but no commercial relationship behind.
Provider links also carry campaign parameters identifying the traffic source. That is ordinary publisher analytics — it lets us see which pages readers act on. It transfers no value and creates no commercial relationship.
If a paid relationship ever existed, those links would carry rel="sponsored" instead, and the relationship would be disclosed at the top of every affected page. You can verify which attribute is in use by viewing the page source on any provider link.
The commitment that costs something
Disclosure alone lets a publisher keep ranking whoever pays it and note the fact in small print. Our commitment is different: a paying provider is removed from every ranked comparison on this site.
That is the version of this policy that has a price attached, which is the only reason it means anything.
